Why Cloud Hosting

CCH Axcess Tax, without the environment sprawl.

CCH Axcess Tax is already delivered as a cloud application, but most firms still run it next to locally installed software — Office, PDF tools, a document management system, maybe another product for legacy returns. Hosting puts all of it, Axcess Tax included, inside one secure remote desktop your team reaches from any device, so there’s one login, one printer setup, and one place IT has to manage instead of several.

01

Work From Anywhere

Reach CCH Axcess Tax and every other application your firm runs from home, a client site, or on the road.

02

Multi-User Collaboration

Preparers, reviewers, and admin staff share the same hosted desktop environment without juggling separate logins.

03

One Environment, Not Many

Axcess Tax sits alongside Office, your document management system, and any other software your firm relies on — all in one place.

04

Built-In Disaster Recovery

Automated, redundant backups protect everything stored in your hosted desktop, not just what lives inside Axcess Tax.

05

Seasonal Scalability

Add seasonal preparers during tax season, scale back after — pay only for what you use.

06

Zero Learning Curve

CCH Axcess Tax works exactly as it does today; hosting only changes where you’re sitting when you use it.

Migration & Onboarding

How firms move onto the hosted environment

CCH Axcess Tax itself doesn’t move — it’s already browser-based. Here’s what actually happens when you bring the rest of your environment onto our servers.

01
We schedule around your seasonSetup is planned for a low-volume window on your calendar, not forced onto you during a filing crunch.
02
Office, DMS, and other local software move onto your hosted desktopEverything that used to sit next to CCH Axcess Tax on local machines gets set up in the same managed environment.
03
Printer and file access get configured onceUniversal printing and shared file access are set up for the whole hosted desktop, not per application.
04
Your team logs in and CCH Axcess Tax works exactly as beforePreparers open the same browser-based Axcess Tax they already know, now alongside everything else in one hosted desktop.
Security & Compliance

Security you can show clients

Tax data is the most sensitive information your firm handles — Social Security numbers, income records, bank details. Beyond CCH Axcess Tax’s own security, the hosted desktop environment around it — Office files, local documents, other applications — is built around IRS Publication 4557 and FTC Safeguards Rule–conscious practices, giving you one consistent standard across everything your firm touches, not just what lives inside Axcess Tax.

Compliance

What the FTC Safeguards Rule and IRS Pub 4557 actually require

The FTC Safeguards Rule (16 CFR Part 314) requires every tax preparer to maintain a Written Information Security Plan (WISP) with specific technical safeguards, not just “reasonable” security in the abstract. IRS Publication 4557 lays out the same expectation from the IRS side, as part of the Security Six preparers are required to implement. Neither document tells you exactly how to satisfy them — that’s usually where firms get stuck.

What examiners actually check

✓Encryption of client data at rest and in transit
✓Multi-factor authentication on every account with access to client data
✓Documented access controls — who can reach client data, and why
✓A written incident response plan, not just a mental one
✓Due diligence documentation on any vendor that touches client data

Where this usually breaks down

Most small and mid-size firms don’t fail an audit because they’re careless — they fail because the files and software around CCH Axcess Tax (Office documents, local PDFs, other applications) sit on front-desk PCs or an aging in-office server with no documentation trail. There’s no audit log, no written encryption standard, and no answer to “who else has access to this machine.” None of that is a software problem; it’s an infrastructure problem.

Hosting doesn’t replace your WISP — you still need one — but it gives you something concrete to reference in it. A SOC 2 Type 2 report, which Cloud Innovics holds directly, is documentation you can hand to an examiner or a client, instead of trying to describe the security posture of a physical office PC after the fact. Our infrastructure also runs in data-center facilities that maintain further certifications, such as ISO 27001.

A concrete example: an examiner reviewing your WISP might ask who has admin access to the machine storing client returns, and when that access list was last reviewed. On a hosted environment, that’s a logged, auditable answer in one sentence. On a shared office PC, it usually isn’t an answer at all — it’s a guess.

Buyer’s Guide

7 questions to ask before you host CCH Axcess Tax anywhere

Every hosting provider’s homepage looks reassuring. These are the questions that actually separate a real setup from a reseller with a website.

1. Are they independently audited, or just claiming “bank-level security”?Ask for the actual certification names — SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001 — not marketing language. A provider that can’t name a specific audit standard usually hasn’t had one.
2. Do you keep your own CCH Axcess Tax subscription, or is it bundled into the host’s pricing? Some hosts bundle software into their pricing in a way that makes switching providers later expensive or impossible. Confirm you hold the subscription directly and can take it elsewhere.
3. Is infrastructure sized for your busiest week, or your average one?A server that’s fine in June and crawls in the last two weeks of filing season was provisioned for the wrong week. Ask directly how they handle peak concurrent load.
4. Is migration actually free, or is that an introductory offer?Get it in writing whether free migration applies every time you need it — including if you ever move providers again — not just on day one.
5. Can you reach a person during filing season, or just a ticket queue?Ask what average response time looks like in March specifically, not year-round. Support quality often changes when a provider is at capacity.
6. Where is your data physically hosted, and is there redundancy?A single data center with no failover site is a single point of failure. Ask for named locations, not just “the cloud.”
7. Can you scale users up and down, or are you locked into an annual seat count?Tax practices are seasonal. A provider that only sells annual per-seat contracts is pricing for their convenience, not your filing calendar.

Run through these seven with any provider you’re evaluating, including us — the answers should hold up whether it’s January or June, not just during the sales call.

Client Testimonials

Trusted by firms who can’t afford downtime

“We were already on CCH Axcess Tax, but our team was still bouncing between that browser tab and a completely separate desktop for everything else. Hosting put it all in one place.”

Elaine Ferro · CPA, Ferro & Wolfe LLP

“One login for Axcess Tax, our document management system, and Office made onboarding new seasonal staff dramatically faster.”

Jonathan Reyes · Reyes Compliance Group

“It sounded odd at first — hosting something that’s already cloud-based — but the value was never about Axcess Tax itself, it was about everything around it.”

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about CCH Axcess Tax hosting

Isn’t CCH Axcess Tax already cloud-based — why would I host it?+
CCH Axcess Tax runs in the browser on Wolters Kluwer’s own servers already. What we host is the rest of your firm’s environment around it — Office, your document management system, printers, and any other software you run — so everything sits behind one login instead of several.
Can multiple preparers work in the hosted environment at once?+
Yes. Hosting supports simultaneous multi-user access to the surrounding desktop, alongside however many users your CCH Axcess Tax license allows.
Can I host CCH Document or Workflow alongside Axcess Tax?+
Yes. Most firms host the CCH Suite applications they use together — talk to us about which tools you want in the same environment.
Will my access to CCH Axcess Tax change at all?+
No. You’ll still log into Axcess Tax the same way through your browser — hosting only changes what else is running alongside it in your workspace.
Is there a minimum contract length?+
No. Plans are billed month-to-month — scale up, scale down, or cancel as your firm’s needs change, with no long-term lock-in.
Can I host other tax or accounting software in the same environment?+
Yes. Many firms run QuickBooks, ATX, Drake, Lacerte, or ProSeries in the same hosted desktop alongside CCH Axcess Tax.
Can I access the hosted environment from a Mac or tablet?+
Yes. The surrounding desktop environment is reachable from a Mac, Chromebook, or tablet using a remote desktop connection, not just a Windows PC.
What is the uptime guarantee during tax season?+
Your hosted environment is backed by a 99.9% uptime SLA, so your team has reliable access during peak filing weeks when downtime is least affordable.
How is pricing structured for CCH Axcess Tax hosting?+
Plans are priced per month based on user count, RAM, and storage, from a Starter plan for solo preparers up to Enterprise for high-volume practices. There are no hidden setup fees.
What support is available if something goes wrong?+
U.S.-based support is available, including 24/7 priority support on Growth and Enterprise plans, so issues during filing season get resolved quickly rather than sitting in a queue.
What certifications does your hosting infrastructure hold?+
SOC 2 Type 2 directly. ISO 27001, HIPAA-ready standards, PCI DSS, and SSAE 18 Type 2 (SOC 1) apply at the facility level where our infrastructure runs. See our full data center & infrastructure details →
Can I print from the hosted environment to my office printer?+
Yes. Universal printing lets you print from your hosted desktop, including CCH Axcess Tax, to any printer on your local network.
Does hosting satisfy the FTC Safeguards Rule’s WISP requirement?+
Hosting doesn’t replace your Written Information Security Plan — you still need to write and maintain one — but it gives you concrete, auditable infrastructure controls (encryption, MFA, access logging, SOC 2 Type 2 documentation) to reference in it, instead of describing an office PC’s security after the fact.
Does the FTC Safeguards Rule actually apply to a small tax practice?+
Yes. The rule applies to any business that handles consumer financial data as part of tax preparation, regardless of firm size — there’s no small-firm exemption.
Can I see proof of your certifications before switching?+
Yes. Ask for a copy of our SOC 2 Type 2 report before signing anything — a legitimate provider will share it without hesitation. We’ll also explain which other certifications apply at the data-center facility level, so you know exactly what’s ours directly and what isn’t.
